ASSISTANT/TRAINEE ACCOUNTANT

(Part-time)

Assistant Accountant (trainee) with some accounting software, bookkeeping and tax experience required for Illawarra business that provides Accounting, Bookkeeping, Training, Consulting and Taxation services locally and also Australia wide (using remote technology).

We are accounting software specialists and our clients are SME’s who use Reckon Accounts, QuickBooks, XERO and MYOB.

The role is for an accountant in training but you must have some experience in one or more of the following SME Accounting Software packages (the more the better):

  •  Reckon Accounts or Reckon ONE
  •  QuickBooks Online
  •  XERO
  •  MYOB AccountRight or Essentials

We require someone who has the potential to be a 5 star employee. You will be tested (to a bookkeeping level) in one of the above Accounting Software programs (of your choice) so you will need to be reasonably proficient in at least one program to pass this testing process.

On-going training and support will be provided and your work will include:

  •  Pre-BAS checking and BAS preparation
  •  Assisting with Pre-tax checks and health checks of accounting files
  •  Bookkeeping using the various software
  •  Working with Payroll
  •  Reconciliation of Payroll and Superannuation and preparation of Payment  Summaries
  •  Electronic lodgements
  •  Managing and answering some email enquiries
  •  Returning some phone calls
  •  Assisting with procedure writing and file management
  •  Assisting the Senior Accountant

As you gain experience your work may also include:

  •  Preparation of Business (and some Individual) Tax Returns
  •  Providing training in Accounting Software products
  •  Remote consulting and support of accounting programs

You will initially work from our office in Tullimbar but as you become more able to work with minimal supervision, working from home (at least some of the time) is a definite possibility. From time to time there may also be work on site with clients (so you will need a car).

Great English and communication skills are necessary (including spelling, grammar and pronunciation) as you will be regularly dealing with clients by phone and email as well as face to face. For the same reason you must be friendly and able to interact and get on with a mix of personality types.

Accuracy and attention to detail, as well as the ability to be able to keep to a deadline is a prerequisite for this role and you will be assisting the Senior Accountant keep to her deadlines.

Working with technology and "The Cloud" is a day to day part of what we do, so you need to love and be very savvy when it comes to using apps, cloud products, business software and technology generally.

You will need to be someone that can quickly find their way around new programs and problem solve things that you have never seen or done before. If you need to be shown everything in a step by step fashion this position will not suit you. On the other hand, you will be expected to use checklists and follow detailed procedures for much of your work, so if you are someone that just likes to do your own thing and thinks procedures are a waste of time then again this job will not suit.

If you have completed the Tax Law and Commercial Law subjects at Uni or TAFE; have some work experience preparing tax returns (including Business Returns) and BAS; have worked with at least one SME Accounting Software product and have the other essential requirements listed above, you will have a real edge in gaining this position, (even more so if you also have a bookkeeping background).

The employment period is for 3 months to start, but Permanent work may be offered to the right candidate after this trial period.

The job is 15 hours per week initially but there is significant potential for more hours for the right person.
